Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time

As the church, we are in the midst of Ordinary Time, which will last until Advent.

This is a six-month season commemorating the time of growth and gospel-expansion after Christ ascended and poured out His Spirit on the Church.

Though called ordinary, we encourage you to give attention to God’s work in every plain moment. Everything in the universe is, right now, being upheld by the word of Christ (Hebrews 1).

Consider what the ordinary reveals.

Every grain of sand, every star, every creeping thing and flying bird is known by Jesus our Lord. As the great Conductor, He orchestrates each rhythmic crash of the ocean’s waves, each blade of grass bending and bowing under the breeze. Right now, He is delighting in scurrying chipmunks, new grass on rolling hills, trees that provide friendly shade in their canopies.

Every Sunday, Yahweh feeds millions of His people through His word and table. He pours out heavenly water on infant saints. His Spirit enlivens the psalms and praises of His Bride. He uses His shepherds’ voices to speak His word to countless sheep, and He even brings new sheep into the fold. Flour, water, and salt find their home in eucharistic bread as Christ is shared at His feast. The grapes He sprung up years ago meet their culminating moment as wine is passed from hand to hand.

As you slept last night, Christ upheld your frame, kept your heart beating, gave you everything you needed for today. Upon waking, He greeted you with new mercies too many to count (though it’s a thrilling exercise to try). We could continue to enumerate God’s works like this, but the world wouldn’t contain the books that would be written.

Our Lord is working wonders in every square inch of the ordinary.

Don’t miss it.
